What are polymer additives?

Polymer additives are functional additives that are incorporated into plastics, compounds and masterbatches to selectively improve or create specific properties. Unlike coating additives, polymer additives are introduced directly into the plastic matrix – for example during compounding or masterbatch production.

What is the difference between polymer additives and coating additives?

Polymer additives are used in compounds, masterbatches and plastic films. They must withstand high processing temperatures (above 300 °C) and remain permanently in the plastic matrix.

Coating additives, on the other hand, are optimised for paints and coatings and are used in the coating formulation.

The two product groups require different properties and particle sizes.

Which polymer additives does Coating Products offer?

What are anti-blocking additives and what are they used for?

Anti-blocking additives prevent the sticking (blocking) of plastic films (BOPP, PE, PP, PET). Microspheres create a microscopically rough surface and act as spacers.

Advantages over inorganic anti-blocking agents: better transparency, low haze and more uniform particle distribution.

How do light diffusing agents work in plastics?

Light diffusing agents are incorporated into transparent or translucent plastics (PC, PS, PMMA, silicone). As light passes through, the microspheres refract and scatter it evenly – the result is a homogeneous, glare-free light distribution.

Applications: LED covers, light profiles, LCD diffuser films and luminaires.

Which plastics are the polymer additives compatible with?

Compatible with: polycarbonate (PC), polystyrene (PS), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as well as silicones and other engineering plastics.

What processing temperatures can the polymer additives withstand?

Suitable for all common plastic processing methods such as extrusion, injection moulding and compounding

How are polymer additives incorporated into masterbatches?

Incorporate into the polymer matrix during compounding. Shear stress during extrusion must be controlled to preserve the spherical structure. Typical concentration in masterbatch: 10–30 %, depending on the application.
