What are coating additives?
Coating additives are functional additives incorporated into paints, lacquers and coatings to selectively improve surface properties – for example gloss level (matting), feel (soft-feel), slip properties or scratch resistance.

Which coating systems are the coating additives suitable for?

For UV coatings, the PMSQ grades (ME series) are particularly recommended
How does matting with microspheres work?
Matting additives based on microspheres scatter incoming light diffusely – the result is a uniformly matte surface with a reduced gloss level. Advantages over conventional silica: better transparency of the coating film, more uniform particle distribution, no negative impact on levelling and a softer feel.
Can coating additives be combined (e.g. matting + soft-feel)?
Yes, in many cases different effects can be combined. The combination of matting and soft-feel is particularly popular – for example for automotive interiors or luxury packaging. The key is matching particle sizes and dosage levels. We are happy to advise you on formulation optimisation.
What are soft-feel additives and how do they create the effect?
Soft-feel additives create a velvety, smooth texture on coated surfaces – similar to velour or rubber. The effect is produced by the spherical microstructure of the particles at the coating surface.
Typical applications: automotive interiors, consumer products, packaging and book covers.
What is the recommended dosage for coating additives?
- Matting additives: 1–5 % based on solid content
- Soft-feel additives: 3–10 %
- Slip additives: 0.5–3 %
Recommendation: start with a low dosage and increase gradually until the desired effect is achieved
Do coating additives affect the transparency of the coating film?
Organic microspheres have a lower turbidity effect than inorganic matting agents such as silica, due to their refractive index (close to that of many coating binders). For clear or glaze coatings, PMMA and PMSQ microspheres are particularly well suited when the difference in refractive index between binder and microsphere is small.
